Islamic Perspective on Marriage

In Islam, there are several arguments that show the urgency of marriage in Islam. One of them is the saying of the Prophet Muhammad which reads:

النِّكَاحُ من سُنَّتِي فمَنْ لمْ يَعْمَلْ بِسُنَّتِي فَليسَ مِنِّي ، و تَزَوَّجُوا ؛ فإني مُكَاثِرٌ بِكُمُ الأُمَمَ

Marriage is my sunnah; whoever does not follow my sunnah is not one of me. So get married, for I will be proud of the number of my people (on the Day of Judgement)

(Ibn Majah 1846, authenticated by al-Albani in Silsilah Ash Shahihah 2383).

From the hadith, it can be understood that marriage is one of the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW which is recommended to be implemented immediately. In addition, marriage is also believed to open the door to sustenance for married couples. This is based on the words of Allah SWT in QS. An-Nur verse 32 which reads:

وَأَنْكِحُوا الْأَيَامَى مِنْكُمْ وَالصَّالِحِينَ مِنْ عِبَادِكُمْ وَإِمَائِكُمْ إِنْ يَكُونُوا فُقَرَاءَ يُغْنِهِمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَالَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And give in marriage those who are alone among you, and those who are marriageable among your male servants and your female servants. If they are poor, Allah will enable them by His grace. And Allah is vast (His provision) and All-knowing

(QS. An Nur: 32).

In more detail, there are several reasons why marriage can open the door to sustenance for married couples from an Islamic perspective, including:

Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while believing, We will surely give him a good life and We will surely reward him with a better reward than what he has done.

(QS .An-Nahl: 97)

Marriage is a sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and is a great act of worship. Performing the act of marriage means following the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and gaining rewards from Allah. But in performing the act of marriage, of course, there are concerns about sustenance and maintenance for the family, especially for husbands. Hopefully, knowing that Allah ta’ala promises sustenance for those who get married will encourage husbands and singles who want to marry.
