In Islam, ethics play a vital role in guiding a Muslim’s behavior in both personal and professional aspects of life. One of the core ethical values is Amanah, which signifies trustworthiness and honesty. This principle is not only a religious obligation but also a cornerstone of professional ethics in Islam.
The Concept of Amanah in Islam
Amanah, which comes from the Arabic root ‘amina’, means trustworthy and honest. It is a quality that is highly emphasised in the Quran and Hadith. The Quran states in Surah An-Nisa verse 58:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمْتُمْ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ أَنْ تَحْكُمُوا بِالْعَدْلِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ نِعِمَّا يَعِظُكُمْ بِهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا
Verily, Allah enjoins you to deliver the trust to those to whom it is due, and (enjoins you) when you set a law among men to set it justly. Verily, Allah gives you the best teaching. Indeed, Allah is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
This emphasises the importance of performing duties with integrity.
Prophet Muhammad also emphasised the value of Amanah by saying:
مَا خَطَبَنَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِلاَّ قَالَ:لاَ إِيمَانَ لِمَنْ لاَ أَمَانَةَ لَهُ ، وَلاَ دِينَ لِمَنْ لاَ عَهْدَ لَهُ. أخرجه أحمد
“No Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam delivered a sermon before us except that he said:” There is no faith for one who is not trustworthy, and there is no religion for one who does not fulfil a promise.” (Reported by Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) in Musnad Ahmad; authenticated by Shaykh al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) in Saheeh al-Jami’ no. 7179, and Saheeh at-Targhib wat Tarhib no. 3004. It was declared hasan by Shaykh al-Arna’uth (may Allah have mercy on him) in his Ta’liq of the Musnad of Imam Ahmad.
Amanah as a Professional Ethic
In the professional realm, Amanah means being responsible and ethical in one’s work. It involves performing tasks honestly, keeping promises, and taking responsibility for one’s own actions. For example, a professional who upholds Amanah will ensure that his or her work is of high quality, meet deadlines, and handle confidential information with care. These ethical behaviours create an environment of trust, which is essential for the success and growth of any organisation.
Due to the effects of Amanah workers, the Qur’an even mentions that one of the qualities that the best workers possess is Amanah as mentioned in Surah Al-Qashash verse 26:
قالَتْ إِحْدَاهُمَا يَا أَبَتِ اسْتَأْجِرْهُ ۖ إِنَّ خَيْرَ مَنِ اسْتَأْجَرْتَ الْقَوِيُّ الْأَمِينُ
One of the two women said: “My father, take him to work for us, for surely the best person you can hire to work for you is one who is strong and trustworthy”
Benefits of Upholding Amanah
Practicing Amanah in the workplace builds trust among colleagues, clients, and stakeholders. This trust is the foundation of strong professional relationships and effective teamwork. When Amanah is upheld, it leads to a positive reputation, increased loyalty, and long-term success for businesses. Furthermore, it promotes a culture of honesty and integrity, encouraging others to follow suit.
Challenges and Solutions
Maintaining Amanah in a professional setting can be challenging, especially in competitive environments where ethical shortcuts might seem tempting. However, overcoming these challenges involves a commitment to personal integrity and continuous self-reflection. Employers can also foster a culture of Amanah by setting clear ethical standards and providing regular training on ethical practices.
In conclusion, Amanah is a fundamental ethical value in Islam that extends beyond personal conduct to professional ethics. By incorporating Amanah into our professional lives, we can build trust, enhance cooperation, and achieve long-term success. It is a principle that every Muslim professional should strive to uphold, reflecting the true spirit of Islamic ethics.
