Why Dates Are Popular for Breaking Fast
Many say that dates have high nutritional value. In addition, dates are also very easy to carry anywhere so that they are usually eaten when breaking the fast in the month of Ramadan. However, if only the nutritional value and practicality can be carried anywhere, of course the reward value will be reduced from what can actually be achieved.
So as a believer, why are dates the choice for breaking the fast, namely as part of the Sunnah, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, namely starting iftar by eating dates, before leaving for the Maghrib prayer.
The following is the prayer of Rasulullah ﷺ when breaking the fast before performing the Maghrib prayer as stated in the following hadith:
كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يفطر على رطبات قبل أن يصلي فإن لم تكن رطبات فعلى تمرات فإن لم تكن حسا حسوات من ماء
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ broke his fast with ruthab before performing the prayer (Maghrib), so if there was no ruthab (he broke his fast) with tamr. If there was no (tamr) then he broke his fast by drinking water” (HR. Abu Dawud).
The use of dates to maximize the reward of the sunnah when breaking the fast in the month of Ramadan is what makes dates highly sought after and of course will be a very tempting business opportunity in the month of Ramadan.
