Taqwa is The Strongest Shield Amidst Business Competition

“In the stressful business world, peace of mind is a luxury that only the pious can afford.”

Have you ever felt like you’ve worked hard, but the results always seem to be stalled? Or have you ever felt like someone is ” blocking your fortune ,” whether through gossip, slander, or simply unspoken envy?

In the world of work and business, disruption isn’t always mystical or supernatural. Sometimes it comes from within the human heart: envy, jealousy, cheating, or fear of losing one’s position.

But whatever form it takes, one thing is certain: piety is the strongest shield.

Because a pious person’s heart is calm even when the weather is hot outside. Their steps are straight even when the world is winding. And their sustenance continues to flow, not because of human connections, but because Allah ﷻ guarantees it.

Piety, a Real Spiritual Fortress

Piety is not just about praying diligently or giving alms frequently, but an inner attitude that is always aware that Allah ﷻ sees our every intention and step.

It is like a shield that protects, even before the attack comes.

Allah ﷻ says:

وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا ۝ وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ
“And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out, and provide for him from sources he could never imagine.”( Quran Surah At-Talaq [65]: 2–3)

This verse is not just a promise, but also a strategy of faith. Amidst increasing business pressures, when others are busy playing behind closed doors, a pious person chooses to be straightforward and honest. He knows that what determines goodness is not mere tricks, but the approval and wrath of Allah ﷻ .

And what’s interesting, the “way out” that God promises is sometimes not in the form of direct money, but peace of mind, fresh ideas, or networks that come unexpectedly. That is the fortune that comes “min haitsu la yahtasib”, from an unexpected direction.

Keeping peace of mind in the Midst of Envy and Competition

In the workplace, emotional illness is like a virus. It’s invisible, but it slowly eats away at your enthusiasm and good intentions. Sometimes it’s envy of a colleague who’s been promoted, sometimes it’s irritation because a project failed despite your best efforts. Left unchecked, your heart can become filled with complaints and anger, and that’s where distractions can creep in.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْحَسَدَ، فَإِنَّ الْحَسَدَ يَأْكُلُ الْحَسَنَاتِ كَمَا تَأْكُلُ النَّارُ الْحَطَبَ
“Avoid hasad (envy), because desire eats goodness as fire eats firewood.” ( Hadith Narrated by Abu Dawud , no. 4903)

This statement is harsh but true. Sometimes we’re so busy trying to protect our business from external competitors that we forget to guard our hearts from the poison of envy within. Yet, that’s precisely what destroys blessings the most.

Therefore, piety is not just about “fighting evil against others,” but also about guarding our hearts against evil. Even when attacked, a pious person refuses to retaliate with evil means. They choose patience, but not resignation or giving up, believing that Allah ‘s justice is evident through continued effort.

Remaining Pious in the Midst of Competition

We live in an age where many people compete not for blessings, but for victory. However, pious people have a different standard: not victory over others, but victory over their own desires.

Allah ﷻ says:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّقِينَ
“Indeed, Allah loves those who are pious.”
(Qur’an Surah At-Taubah [9]: 4)

And the love of Allah ﷻ is much more valuable than any big project. Because, when Allah ﷻ loves His servant, He Himself becomes his protector.

Therefore, even in the business world, piety is not a barrier. In fact, it is what sets us apart. While some may be clever at strategizing, those who are pious will always excel because God is their support.

Closing: When the World is Hard, Soften Your Heart with Piety

Ultimately, business competition is fierce, but our hearts must not harden. We can remain professional without losing our conscience, and ambitious without losing our direction.

Piety not only brings blessings to our endeavors, but also keeps us sane and calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the work world. And most beautifully, a pious person never fears losing their fortune, because they know who owns it.

“If people knew how vast God’s love is, they would never worry about their sustenance.”

So, amidst the competition, pressure, and temptations of this world, remember that piety is the strongest shield. It not only protects our businesses but also keeps our souls pure and at peace under the protection of Allah ﷻ .
