Setting the Right Intentions

The Prophet taught that the intention to trade should not be solely to accumulate wealth and profit. Intend to trade because of Allah ﷻ, with sincere intentions, all matters will find value with Him. A business that starts with good intentions will receive abundant blessings. So, to start our intention, we have to know, are there any reasons that we can use as a basis for trading charity?

From Rafi’ bin Khadij he said,

“Someone asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ : “Oh Messenger of Allah, what is the best livelihood?” He said, “A man’s work is with his own hands and every sale and purchase is mabrur (blessed).” (HR. Ahmad, Ath Thobroni)

Allah ﷻ says,
“But Allah has permitted trading and forbidden interest.” (QS. Al Baqarah: 275)

From these propositions we can know the priorities and make it easier for us to intend to do business.

Be Honest

Honesty in trading is the main key to building trust. The Prophet emphasized the importance of not reducing the weight and providing correct information to buyers. In a hadith about trading with complete honesty, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“From ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar radhiallahu ‘anhu that Rasuluillah ﷺ said, “A Muslim trader who is honest and trustworthy (trusted) will be (gathered) with the Prophets, the siddiq people and the martyrs on the Day of Judgment (later).”

Surely, you also want to gather with the Prophets and other righteous people, right?

Mutually Beneficial for Both Parties

The principle of mutual consent is a guideline in trading according to the Prophet ﷺ. Buying and selling is not valid if there is coercion without the right way. Buying and selling is only valid if there is mutual consent in it as the word of Allah ﷻ,

“except by way of trade that is valid by mutual consent (mutual consent) between you” (QS. An Nisa’: 29).

From Abu Sa’id Al Khudri, the Prophet ﷺ said,

“Indeed, buying and selling is required to have consent” (HR. Ibn Majah no. 2185).

It is important to reach a mutual agreement that benefits both parties, both in terms of price, type of goods, and marketing methods. Thus, your business will grow based on a mutually beneficial relationship.

Refund Money If Buyer Does Not Purchase (Khiyar)

The Prophet also gave teachings regarding khiyar, the buyer’s right to cancel a transaction. From Hakim bin Hizam’s friend, the Prophet ﷺ said,

“The seller and the buyer each have the right to choose (khiyar) as long as they have not separated. If both are honest and frank with each other, then both will receive blessings in the transaction. On the contrary, if they lie and cover up for each other, surely the blessings for them in that transaction will be lost” (Muttafaqun ‘alaih. HR. Bukhari no. 2079 and Muslim no. 1532)
