Crab Mentality: Hating the Success of Others in Islam
Its normal in day-to-day life to feel uncomfortable when we see someone who is more prosperous, successful or admired than we are. These responses frequently happen unconsciously particularly when the successful individual is a close friend sibling or fellow Muslim. This response is referred to as crab mentality a way of thinking that stems from jealousy and opposition to the advancement of others. Such behavior is not only discouraged in Islam but it is also regarded as a serious heart condition.
How Does Crab Mentality Work?
Crabs in a bucket exhibit behavior that is the source of the term crab mentality. To prevent any from escaping the other crabs will pull down any that attempt to climb out. Its a metaphor for those who whether intentionally or unintentionally try to undermine others in order to keep everyone on the same level because they dislike their success. In addition to social circles and workplaces Muslim communities also exhibit this mindset. We occasionally witness Muslim women in particular disparaging or undermining the accomplishments of their fellow Muslims. A woman who achieves success in her business profession or public appearances may be the object of subtly disparaging remarks criticism or even social exclusion. However Islam exhorts its adherents to support and encourage one another in virtue rather than to bring one another down.

The Islamic View of Crab Mentality
Islam encourages its adherents to compete in righteousness rather than by demeaning others. In the Quran Allah ﷻ forbids envy outright:
“And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others.”
(Surah An-Nisa: 32)
This verse serves as a clear reminder that Allah ﷻ gives each person their own portion of sustenance and destiny and that feeling jealous of other peoples accomplishments is the same as doubting His wisdom.
In a famous hadith the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also warned against envy:
“Do not envy one another, do not raise prices by overbidding against one another, do not hate one another, do not turn your backs on one another, and do not undercut one another in trade; and be, O slaves of Allah, our brothers. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim; he does not wrong him, he does not fail him, and he does not despise him. Piety lies here,” and he pointed to his chest three times. “It is enough evil for a person to look down upon his Muslim brother. All of a Muslim is inviolable to another Muslim: his blood, his property, and his honor.”
(Narrated by Muslim: 2564)
Envy not only ruins relationships but it also shows a lack of faith since it suggests discontent with Allah ﷻs will.
Origins of the Crab Mentality
Crab mentality can be caused by a number of things. One is a lack of thankfulness and self-confidence. People view other peoples success as a threat rather than an inspiration when they lack confidence in their own skills or are unable to accept that others may succeed. An environment that is unhealthy and excessively competitive also contributes. Instead of fostering cooperation and mutual support people start to view one another as competitors. This kind of thinking destroys teamwork fosters jealousy and stifles trust.

The Repercussions of a Crab Attitude
Crab mentality has repercussions for the entire community not just for the individual. It can lead to a poisonous environment at work where people are distrustful scheming and uncooperative. It erodes the spirit of supporting one another in pursuing righteousness and weakens brotherhood (ukhuwah) within Muslim communities and families. Even worse it hinders group advancement. Nobody really advances if everyone is intent on bringing others down. Not because of a lack of talent but rather because of internal sabotage Muslim communities may find themselves falling behind in important areas like leadership education and the economy.

How to Get Past It
Consistent effort and self-awareness are necessary to avoid crab mentality. First we need to be aware of our own jealousy. When someone else achieves if you feel uneasy or bitter use that as a cue to examine yourself and adjust your perspective. The cultivation of gratitude is the next step. Being grateful for what you have no matter how little is the best defense against jealousy. Offer up dua (prayer) for those who achieve success and allow their accomplishments to inspire you rather than intimidate you. According to Islam we benefit from praying for others as well. Lastly create a positive social network. Keep a supportive group of people around you people who will challenge you to grow and rise together rather than pull each other down and who will remind you when you start to slide into negativity.
In Conclusion
Islam condemns crab mentality as a serious spiritual illness not just a pessimistic outlook. It is caused by jealousy insecurity and an inability to recognize other peoples accomplishments. However Islam encourages us to be thankful for Allah ﷻ s blessings support one another and aim for excellence. We ought to assist one another in rising rather than bringing others down. Because in Islam, real success is about helping others climb not about being the best.
