Qana’ah and Ambition: Are They Opposing Concepts in Islam?

We frequently come across two ideas in daily life that appear to be mutually exclusive: ambition and qana’ah (contentment). While qana’ah encourages us to be content with what Allah has given us ambition pushes us to work toward improvement. The relationship between qana’ah and ambition is examined from an Islamic perspective in this article which cites a number of trustworthy sources. Are these two ideas incompatible with Islam or can they coexist?

The Islamic Meaning of Qana’ah

The word qana’ah refers to being happy and content with what one has. According to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

The successful person is the one who has accepted Islam received enough food and been satisfied by Allah with what He has given (Narrated by Muslim).

Being passive or resigned to the situation is not what qana’ah implies. Instead it is an attitude of thankfully accepting what Allah ﷻ has provided for us. qana’ah is a noble quality that calms the heart. Because they trust that Allah ﷻ has already distributed their sustenance, people who practice qana’ah are free from envy or jealousy toward others. However qana’ah does not imply that we should become lazy or cease trying. As opposed to this qana’ah needs to be accompanied by genuine effort and tawakkal or reliance on Allah ﷻ.

Ambition: The Will to Advance

The desire to reach greater goals on the other hand is frequently regarded as ambition. Islam strongly encourages positive ambition or ghirah so long as it is focused on doing good deeds and does not conflict with its precepts. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself was driven to fight for the truth and propagate the Islamic faith. Islam views ambition as encompassing not only material goals but also enhancing ones worship and moral behavior. While ambition encourages us to develop, qana’ah serves as a reminder to be thankful and refrain from greed. The secret is to remain sincere in our intentions and make sure that our objectives line up with seeking Allah ﷻ’s blessing.

Combining Ambition and Qana’ah

First, we must realize that qana’ah is not a hindrance to success. Then we can incorporate qana’ah and ambition into our everyday lives. It serves as a foundation that rather keeps us composed and appreciative throughout all of our endeavors. Second, ambition ought to be focused on things that will benefit us and other people. By constantly keeping in mind our ultimate goal—the hereafter—we can strike a balance between qana’ah and ambition. In this manner we stay inspired to perform to the best of our abilities while avoiding being overcome by material greed.

Example from The Prophet ﷺs Companions

The Prophet ﷺs companions  are great examples of combining ambition and qana’ah. For example Umar ibn Al-Khattab was a well-known leader who was driven to increase the size of the Islamic realm while leading a modest and happy life. He never amassed wealth for his own benefit instead he used it to further the ummah.

Another example will be Abdurrahman bin Auf, He was a very rich companion that collected great amounts of wealth. But he was never greedy about the material wealth, he use the wealth that Allah ﷻ blessed him with to help The Prophet ﷺ and Ummah by his generous sadaqah.

This tale illustrates that ambition and qana’ah are not mutually exclusive ideas but rather two sides of the same coin. While ambition motivates us to contribute and develop qana’ah shields our hearts from greed.

In conclusion

In Islam ambition and qana’ah are not mutually exclusive. If we have a correct understanding of their meanings and purposes they can coexist peacefully. While ambition inspires us to pursue greatness qana’ah teaches us to be thankful and accept what Allah ﷻ has given us. We may strike a balance between the two and give our lives greater meaning and appeal to Allah ﷻ by continuing to act with good intentions and never forgetting Him. So keep pushing forward and be grateful at the same time.
