The Concept of Thoyyib Eating in Islam
Food is a basic human need that serves as a source of energy and nutrition. In Islam, the concept of “thoyyib” food is highly emphasised. Thoyyib comes from Arabic which means clean, healthy, and good quality. Thoyyib food not only fulfils health standards but also conforms to religious and ethical teachings. Many texts in the Qur’an and Hadith emphasise the importance of halal and thoyyib food.
One of the Qur’anic verses that mentions the command to eat halal and thoyyib food is:
وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ
“And made lawful for them all that is good (thoyyib) and forbidden for them all that is bad (khobits)” (QS Al A’raf: 157).
This verse confirms that the food consumed must be halal and wholesome, and consuming that which is bad and dirty is forbidden in Islam.
In addition, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
إن الله طيب لا يقبل إلا طيبا
“Verily, Allah is good and accepts nothing but what is good (thoyyib)” (HR Muslim).
This Hadith emphasises that Allah only accepts good things, including the food we consume.
Religious Aspect
In Islam, halal and wholesome food is very important. Halal means that the food is permissible according to Islamic law, while thoyyib emphasises the quality and cleanliness of the food. Allah says in the Qur’an:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُلُوا مِنْ طَيِّبَاتِ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِلَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ
O you who believe, eat of the good sustenance We have given you and give thanks to Allah, if indeed to Him you worship (QS Al Baqarah:172).
This verse emphasises that the food consumed must be halal and thoyyib, making it not only physically but also spiritually safe.
Islam teaches its followers to maintain a healthy body as a mandate from Allah. Consuming halal and wholesome food is part of maintaining that trust. In addition, eating halal food is also considered a form of worship, because it follows Allah’s commands and protects the body that He has given.
Health Aspect
Thoyyib food must be healthy and nutritious. This means the food should be free from harmful substances such as pesticides, chemicals, and excessive preservatives. Good nutrition from thoyyib food can help the body maintain health and prevent various diseases. A thoyyib diet involves consuming vegetables, fruits, grains, and meat processed in a good and proper manner. For instance, organic vegetables and fruits grown without harmful chemicals or pesticides are healthier compared to conventionally grown produce.
Additionally, the concept of thoyyib encompasses balanced nutrition principles. The body requires a variety of nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals in appropriate amounts. A balanced diet helps maintain an ideal body weight, boosts energy levels, and improves overall body functions.
Social Aspect
Thoyyib food also considers social aspects such as justice in the food supply chain. This includes how the food is produced, whether farmers and workers receive fair wages, and whether the production methods are environmentally friendly. Consuming thoyyib food also means supporting sustainable and ethical practices.
For example, choosing fair trade-certified products helps ensure that farmers and workers in developing countries receive fair wages and work in safe conditions. Additionally, opting for locally produced and seasonal foods can reduce the carbon footprint and support the local economy.
The concept of thoyyib eating is a holistic approach that not only focuses on physical health but also encompasses religious and social aspects. By adhering to the principles of thoyyib eating, we can ensure that the food we consume is good for the body, in line with religious teachings, and supports social justice and environmental sustainability.
Implementing thoyyib eating practices in daily life can be done through simple steps, such as choosing fresh and natural ingredients, avoiding processed foods high in sugar and salt, and supporting sustainable production practices. By doing so, we not only maintain our own health but also contribute to the well-being of society and the preservation of the environment.
