Authentic Prayer for Breaking the Ramadhan Fast
Do you often hear prayers for breaking the fast that sound like this?
Allahumma laka shumtu wa bika aamantu wa ‘alaika tawakkaltu wa ‘ala rizqika afthartu.
Meaning: “O Allah, I fast to You, I believe in You, I rely on You, and with Your provision I break my fast.”
But apparently, this prayer is narrated in a weak hadith (dhaif). Shaykh Al Albani in Irwa’ul Ghalil (4/38) explains that this hadith has a broken sanad and is considered mursal, so it is not strong enough to be practiced.
Well, instead, there is a prayer for breaking the fast in Ramadan that is authentic and more recommended:
ذهبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Dzahabazh zhoma’u wabtallatil ‘uruqu wa tsabatal ajru insha Allah.
It means: “Thirst has gone, veins have been moistened, and reward has been determined, insha Allah.”
This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud (2357) and was considered hasan by Shaykh Al Albani in Sahih Abu Dawud. So, if you want to make sure our prayers are in accordance with the sunnah, let’s memorize this prayer!

The Importance of Praying When Breaking the Fast
Did you know that praying when breaking the fast is very effective? Rasulullah ﷺ said:
Tsalāṡatun lā turaddu da‘watuhum: as-ṣā’imu ḥattā yuftar, wal imāmul ‘ādil, wa da‘watul maẓlūm.
It means: “Three people whose prayers are not rejected: a fasting person until he breaks his fast, a just leader, and the prayer of the oppressed.” (Narrated by Tirmidhi No. 2526, authenticated by Shaykh Al Albani in Sahih At-Targhib wa At-Tarhib 1/448).
So, don’t waste your time breaking your fast by only focusing on food, okay! Take the time to pray because this is a special moment full of blessings.

Sunnah and Etiquette of Breaking the Fast
To make the moment of breaking the fast even more perfect, let’s apply the following sunnah and etiquette of breaking the fast:
- Hastening to Break the Fast
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
لَا يَزَالُ النَّاسُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا عَجَّلُوا الْفِطْرَ
Lā yazālun-nāsu bikhairin mā ‘ajjalul-fiṭr.
It means: “People will always be in goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast.” (Narrated by Bukhari No. 1957 and Muslim No. 1098).
So, there’s no need to delay breaking the fast, just drink water or eat dates as soon as the Maghrib call to prayer sounds.
- Break the fast with dates or water
The Prophet ﷺ had the habit of breaking the fast with dates or water. From Anas bin Malik radhiyallahu ‘anhu, he said:
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُفْطِرُ عَلَى رُطَبَاتٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رُطَبَاتٌ فَتَمَرَاتٌ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَمَرَاتٌ حَسَا حَسَوَاتٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ
Kāna an-Nabiyyu ṣallallāhu ‘alaihi wa sallam yuftiru ‘alā ruṭabātin qabla an yuṣallī, fa in lam takun ruṭabātun fatamarātun, fa in lam takun tamarātun ḥasā ḥasawātin min mā’.
Meaning: “The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam broke his fast with wet dates before prayer. If there were none, then with dry dates. If there were none, he took a few sips of water.” (HR. Abu Dawud No. 2356, hasanized by Shaykh Al Albani in Sahih Abu Dawud).
- Don’t overeat
Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an:
وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَWa kulū wasyrabū wa lā tusrifū, innahū lā yuḥibbul-musrifīn.
Meaning: “Eat and drink, but do not overdo it. Indeed, Allah does not like people who overdo it.” (QS. Al-A’raf: 31).
So, even though the food on the table is abundant and tempting, keep the portions in check so that the body remains healthy and worship is smoother!
