The Legacy of Khadeejah: Sacrificing Wealth for the Prophet ﷺ
The sacrifice of Khadijah’s wealth for the sake of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s mission is an inspiring example of how a woman played a vital role in supporting Islam’s early struggles. As the first wife of the Prophet, Khadijah not only offered emotional support but also made tremendous financial sacrifices to help the Prophet spread the message of Islam. This article discusses Khadijah’s background, how her wealth was used for the Prophet’s mission, and the lessons we can draw from her exemplary life.
Khadijah’s Background: A Wealthy and Respected Entrepreneur
Khadijah bint Khuwaylid was a highly successful businesswoman in Mecca before marrying the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Born into a noble Quraysh family, she ran a vast trade business, managing an extensive network of trade routes beyond Mecca. Known for her intelligence and integrity, Khadijah amassed significant wealth, making her one of the most influential women in Mecca.
Her decision to marry Muhammad ﷺ, then known as Al-Amin (the trustworthy), was a pivotal moment in Islamic history. After their marriage, Khadijah fully supported her husband’s mission, not only with her love but also her wealth. Khadijah’s financial support became a cornerstone for the early efforts to spread Islam.
Khadijah’s Financial Sacrifices for Islam
When the Prophet ﷺ received the first revelation in the Cave of Hira, Khadijah was the first to believe in him. From the very beginning of Islam, the challenges were immense, from economic boycotts to physical and mental persecution of the early Muslims. In these trying times, Khadijah used her wealth to support the cause of Islam.
- Providing for the Muslim Community’s Needs
Khadijah used her wealth to care for the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslim community. Many of the early Muslims were from poor and vulnerable backgrounds, and Khadijah ensured that their basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter were met. - Sustaining the Mission During the Boycott
One of Khadijah’s greatest sacrifices was during the economic boycott against the Muslims in the valley near Abu Talib’s residence. During this period, the Quraysh leaders isolated Banu Hashim and the Prophet’s followers, cutting off their access to essential supplies. Khadijah willingly spent her entire fortune to ensure the survival of the Muslim community during these difficult times. Though her wealth was depleted, Khadijah never regretted her sacrifices for the cause of Islam. - Total Dedication for the Sake of Allah
Khadijah’s sacrifices were not limited to emergency situations. She consistently devoted her resources to the progress of Islam. She understood the mission required financial support, and without hesitation, Khadijah gave her wealth for the message of tawhid (monotheism). Her role as a financial and moral backbone of the Prophet’s mission was invaluable.
Emotional and Spiritual Support of Khadijah
Beyond financial support, Khadijah was a pillar of emotional and spiritual strength for the Prophet ﷺ. In moments of hardship, Khadijah was always there to comfort and encourage the Prophet. After receiving the first revelation, when the Prophet returned home shaken, it was Khadijah who consoled him, assuring him that what he experienced was from Allah and that he would never be forsaken.
Khadijah stood by the Prophet’s side even when the Quraysh mocked, threatened, and boycotted him. Her unwavering support enabled the Prophet to remain steadfast in his mission, knowing that he had a loyal partner who supported him in every way.
The Prophet’s Honor for Khadijah
Khadijah’s sacrifices earned her a high place of honor, both from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and from Allah. The Prophet ﷺ cherished Khadijah’s memory, even long after her passing. Numerous hadith narrate how the Prophet ﷺ spoke of Khadijah with deep love and reverence. One such hadith provides a remarkable indication of Khadijah’s elevated status:
From Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
“Jibril came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Khadijah is coming to you carrying a dish with food or drink. When she reaches you, convey to her greetings of peace from her Lord and from me, and give her glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of hollow pearls, where there is no noise or hardship.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3820, Sahih Muslim 2432)
This hadith highlights the divine honour given to Khadijah, promising her a house in Paradise a sign of Allah’s appreciation for her sacrifices.
Lessons from Khadijah’s Sacrifice for the Ummah
Khadijah’s life offers valuable lessons for Muslims, particularly in the area of sacrifice for the sake of Islam. Khadijah teaches us that supporting Islam can take many forms, including financial contributions, time, and effort.
